advanced features

So Amy and I were gossiping about the theme editor. :) We think it would be a really cool idea to add the option for bg color in the text tab. Mostly because the “labels” text for the Details box is the only headings that don’t have the option to have a bg color like the rest of the headings (About Me, Music, Books, etc.) We also think it would be cool if there was an “advanced options” tab with other neat things that we could tweak that have been decided against in the past so to not confuse others. Right now I can’t think of one off the top of my head. But, I’ll post again if I think of some! :) |
i’m not really getting anything. i’m tired anyways. you could update the editor and i’ll try out the new features. =) |
Hey Kon! How are you doing? I’ve been so busy with my kids now that the weather has warmed up…. so this post is me trying to convince Sachiko we need more features! :0) so go play with the editor and see what all you can do! ;) |
Ah~ yes, like the xray themes? That theme has a background on the labels.. and also have display:block. I can add that easily! (I think) Do you think we need it for label only? Or general text and links as well? Oh, I remember Amy said something about the default layout. Is it really popular? Since now we have a hack to repeat background it might be cool to have that now. Before, I thought it won’t be as cool because you can’t see the background at all. We can really do lots of things on the editor since I don’t need help from Chao either :D so keep the requests coming! :) |

well on the default layouts, you can see the background but just on the sides. and people usually change the headers and the fonts and the default area varies in colors but it’s always one solid area… here’s some examples… http://www.hot-lyts.com/myspace-layouts/preview.php?id=2561&submit.x=112&submit.y=21 http://www.hotfreelayouts.com/layouts/preview/64592 http://www.hotfreelayouts.com/layouts/preview/64579 and this one i was just playing around with the editor and made it do this but then it tells me i have to choose a theme when i go to update my profile… http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p297/AmyHerrera_album/screenshot.png so that’s what actually gave me the idea to ask you guys. cause the system already makes the layout it just doesn’t recognize it as correct lol |
have you tried to create a theme and add in the colors that match the default layout?? the only thing is the main table will still be transparent and you will see all the boxes separately. Does that explain it right? Like on the default if you change the bg you only see it on the sides. But on coolchaser layouts you see the background in between all the tables too. |
oh and Sachiko I think we should have the option to have the bg color on the text and links too. Not sure of a need for it on text really. I just wanted it on links so I could do a cool highlight effect on hover. |
Hi Amy! OK so I see from the links you gave me the different options we might have: 1) Background and ability to display:block on labels, perhaps text-align too (lightbluetext8) All is easy except for 4) and 5) :D Not sure about 3) need to play around but I think it’s easy but you never know, there might be some conflict :P Not sure how popular the demand is so let me just do what seems to be harmless :) |
Oh hey Heathaaa, you were on the forum too right now :D Ok so on top of that list I’ll add 6) Background color on the links :D |
sounds hot :o) |
Oh hi!! LoL I ran away after I posted that! So I just noticed that I can’t use the advanced CSS tab anymore. I think the new tiny layout tab pushed it away. It’s hiding behind the all boxes button now and I can’t click it! :( |
woo hoo! I love the option to tile small images! I made a few today. I also made a tiny defaultish theme. It’s on my profile right now for the moment. :) |
k so check this out, i made a default layout on coolchaser but i had to actually make the background with the center area, and then i just make the theme with all black tables and no borders… here’s the link… |
Oh crap! Sorry Heathaaa, you can use firebug and change the css for the #nav_tab_header to width 560px for now! It will be fixed soon on our site when we deploy next time :) Thanks Amy for posting an example! So, by meaning “default” is it more like having a solid background behind all the tables? Rather than having the MySpace color scheme of white, blue, orange? |
well, some people like a little of the default color scheme. I’ve seen default profiles that have a little twist. Like the name text is bold and huge and in some kind of script font and all the rest are using “small fonts” font. default with cool pattern bg on the sides is like.. way cool! :P |
yeah it varies, they’re both ways really, some people like it basic where the only difference is the background on the sides and some like a lot different so for the people that like the basic kind, all they’d have to do is just change the bg in the layout editor and have the option to not choose a theme. the for the kind like mine, that’d be a little more tricky, you’d have to have options for a default layout, and then where you can change the bg color, and so the boxes would just be transparent and the color they’d choose would be for the whole box, and then they could edit the headers and other things as usual, they could still add pics on the network, banner, and contact boxes as usual. did i lose you with all that lol |
yeah I get it. You want the option to create a theme with the main table one solid color instead of putting the color in the tables individually. That def needs to go in an advanced tab! LoL We could also add advanced options to make the background colors for each heading diff. Well it’s almost like that now I guess. The only one that is left out is whitetext12 I think. But, I think in general there should be advanced options to tweak every little thing that has a class name. hehe! That is a little complicated I think tho. That’s why I just like to do it manually in the super top secret “advanced CSS” tab. |
check out this profile, i found it while i was browsing but it’s super awesome. it doesn’t really even look like a myspace page |
That is an interesting style. |
Hey gang! :D So the more I think about it, I think these options are gonna be endless LOL so I think it’s better to have an advanced css textarea where people can put in their own styles. So, I think we didn’t make it public because we were afraid people were gonna put some weird code (like a clear absolute gif that links to some spam site) in there that could mess up people’s profile. Oh wait, if we only allow css maybe it might not be a problem. Oh I guess they could take out our banner that way :P Can you guys tell me what nasty things they can do if we allow any css? I like the profile that Amy posted, it’s certainly different! I see MySpace layouts are evolving! I like the way it handles the “My Blurb” text because the time we launched our site, MySpace didn’t have a class name on tables so it was impossible to do anything about that text (it had double headers!) so we just hid it! :P |
yeah that’s a test page, i found that layout on createblog.com with some of the other defaults oh and sachiko, people can take the coolchaser labels off anyways if they can read the html and css, i used to take it off all the time but then when i made a banner layout, it deleted the banner when i deleted the cc code lol but i’ve left it on since then. i promise :o) |
wow, i kinda missed out on a lot. D= |

Amy…you’re going straight to jail for stealing layouts and taking off the banner! :P You can still enter html in the Advanced CSS tab if you close the style tag, enter the html, then open it again and leave it open….cuz the editor will close it. Sort of how we do it when we add new custom sections to our profile. Also it opens it up for people to enter incorrect CSS. Hopefully they would notice it messes up the preview…but I already know how much people don’t pay attention to the preview!! So here is some code to make the main table one solid color for the default layouts:
<style>
table td td {
background-color:ffffff;
}
.navigationBar td {
background-color:transparent;
}
.contactTable td{
background-color:transparent;
}
</style>
It makes the main table all one color. Then I had to add a couple of fixes for the top navigation menu (home, browse, etc) and the contact table. I used it on this theme: |

ok sorry I’m totally hogging this thread…somebody please stop me!! So…as far as spammers using themes for malicious code…I’m starting to think it’s probably not going to be a big problem. Since to use it, you have to enter that security text each time you update your profile. With it being so hard to make a theme that will be popular enough to affect thousands of profiles….this is not a very ideal way for spammers to…spam. The only concern I would have is if someone DID use it for spam and thousands of people DID get their myspace hacked as a result…everyone will point the finger to coolchaser since that is where the code came from. :( Just my thoughts. |

Yes, Amy, you are arrested for taking off banners! LOL Speaking of which, I’m bored with our current banner, do you think we can have a contest or something for a new banner? Something more “current” :D Let me know if you see any cool banners around also! So, I was playing around to see how people can abuse the advanced css and it does seem like they can enter some html in there currently. I managed to put a huge invisible gif that leads to yahoo! :D And since it’s invisible, people can’t tell from the preview. So if we do allow people to put their own css, we need to strip out any tags with the < in it. So this will have to wait until Chao is back from vacation. I’ll ask him to join this forum once he’s back as I’m leaving right after he comes back too! :D I’m still playing around to see if I can add some of the options above thou! |
